Abstract

At the beginning of the last century, Uzbek intellectuals beginning to gain literary recognition dedicated themselves to eliminate the economic, political, and cultural crisis in society, and to see their homeland among the developed nations of the world. To achieve their objectives, they stepped onto struggle. So, their struggle under the name “Jadids” took its deserved place in history. First and foremost, they aimed to make the nation literate and to create a literary language based on certain rules. To this end, they opened schools, established national press, and organized national theater activities. In the education process of the new-style schools organized by the Jadids, shortcomings in the representation of Uzbek sounds in the Arabic script and problems in orthography became evident. To address these issues, they reformed the script and worked on establishing national orthographic rules. In the formation of the orthographic rules of the Uzbek literary language, the services of the prominent intellectual Qayum Ramazon are invaluable. Like other Jadid intellectuals, Qayum Ramazon was involved in educational activities. Additionally, he was an active member of the “Chigatoy gurungi” organized under the leadership of Fitrat, and served as a supervisor in the Department of Education of Old Tashkent, responsible for developing the methodology of language and literature lessons in schools and monitoring school activities. Based on practical experience in these processes, he wrote and published works such as Mother Tongue (1918, co-authored), Lessons in Uzbek Language (1925, co-authored), Uzbek Language Among the Languages of the World (1930), Orthographic Rules of the Uzbek Literary Language (1931), Unified Orthographic Rules of the Uzbek Literary Language (1934), and Morphology (1937). This article discusses his work Orthographic Rules of the Uzbek Literary Language (1931).
