The Use of Orientation Metaphors in Kyrgyz Proverbs

Abstract

A way of considering something with something else through concepts, a metaphor is a structure transferring us every statement belonging to the language with a metaphorical meaning in a wide variety of areas from daily speech to philosophical texts, more precisely taken into consideration as a structure depending on who says it. Having types such as ontological metaphor, orientational metaphor, conventional metaphor, poetic metaphor, concept metaphor, complex metaphor, mixed metaphor, and nested metaphor , metaphors can be seen in proverbs. Saying a lot of things with a few statements and creating us a different thinking area with a metaphorical expression, proverbs are the words of wisdom which reflect tradition, culture, and mentality as in all nations and also in the Turkish Language Ancestral expressions of Kyrgyz known as will be analysed in terms of orientational metaphors in this study. Orientational metaphors which have been the topic of a few Turkish studies to until today will be discussed within the context of metaphoric meanings that Kyrgyz Turks attribute to the direction words under the subtitles of directional metaphors which are down- up, far- close, front-back, forward- backward, wide- narrow, and beyond- the near side. The selection of Kyrgyz proverbs in the study has the purpose of creating a sample from Turkish dialects. The fact that the metaphorical constructions of proverbs used in Turkish dialects have not been studied sufficiently is one of the original characteristics of study. With the sample in question, it will be the beginning of a search for metaphors used in proverbs in other Turkish dialects.
